(WBTV) - The Charlotte Fire Department has identified the two men killed in the massive construction fire in south Charlotte’s SouthPark neighborhood last week. When conditions changed, the rescuers transmitted their own distress call and another company of firefighters was dispatched to rescue the first group. Unfortunately, neither set of firefighters was able to locate the two trapped workers. More than 90 firefighters were called to battle a massive fire at an apartment complex that was under construction near SouthPark Mall Thursday. The fire started shortly after 9am on Liberty Row Drive. Their fire alarm started to go off in their building, so the office workers evacuated.

The fire was visible for miles with large plumes of smoke filling the air all over Charlotte. One person near the fire said they started yelling out of their window but firefighters couldn't hear them. Another company of firefighters battled dangerous flames in order to successfully rescue a worker trapped atop a construction crane. Before that worker could climb down, firefighters brought him "protective equipment" to help him manage the intense heat of the crane and its ladder during his descent.

Looking back at past five-alarm fires in Charlotte's history, a storage building was destroyed by a five-alarm fire in southwest Charlotte in July 2022. According to its website, Modera SouthPark is a wood-frame, podium-style community consisting of twin buildings that make up more than 200 apartment homes. The witness said, at that point, they started taking video of the smoke.
By Thursday evening, not much of the apartment building remained. Many of the construction workers said there were crews on every floor of the building. They said when the flames sparked, the workers themselves tried to put out the fire.

A crane operator spotted two people working on windows and tried to swing a basket over to them to help, but the smoke and fire made the rescue too difficult. Channel 9 has not confirmed that Demonte Sherrill and the other construction worker were those two people. The crane operator, among the 15 people rescued by firefighters, was treated by local EMS for non life-threatening injuries and taken to a hospital, fire officials reported. Firefighters in North Carolina rescued at least 15 people including a crane operator Thursday after a five-alarm fire involving injuries broke out at a construction site near downtown Charlotte. Firefighters were trying to reach the two trapped construction workers, but firefighters had to declare their own "mayday" during the rescue attempt.
Fire officials struck a fifth alarm shortly before 10 a.m. Smoke quickly clouded the area, creating respiratory issues for some as multiple agencies went to the scene to contain the massive fire. SouthPark, home to a large shopping mall, is an "upscale neighborhood" with "high-end" restaurants and boutiques, according to travel website Charlotte's Got a Lot.
Four members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were also shot, one of whom died from his injuries on Monday night, the police said on social media. The officer who died, Joshua Eyer, had been helping other officers arrest the suspect when he was shot, the police said. A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police sergeant was on the task force but was not struck by gunfire, Jennings said.
He was transported to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries. — Officials from the City of Charlotte held a media briefing Friday. Fire Chief Reginald Johnson confirmed that the fire was started by a spray insulation trailer on the ground floor. Officials described a city and state that was in mourning. North Carolina’s governor, Roy Cooper, said that he had met with the families of the slain officers. Officials said on Tuesday that the man who killed four officers trying to serve arrest warrants on him was armed with a powerful AR-15-style rifle and a 40-caliber handgun.
On Tuesday, Jennings said one CMPD officer remains hospitalized for a gunshot wound after undergoing surgery. Antonio Planas is a breaking news reporter for NBC News Digital. Officials believe two people fired at law enforcement, Jennings said. "It was just last month I was in this very room congratulating Officer Eyer for becoming officer of the month in April," Police Chief Johnny Jennings said. "And he certainly dedicated his life and gave his life to serve our citizens." One person has been seriously injured as a result of the fire, Queen City News reports.
On Tuesday, the US Marshals Service identified the fourth officer killed as one of its deputies, 48-year-old Thomas Weeks. He had a wife and four children, US Marshals Service Director Ron Davis said. "They knew what they were going into and still held their own in an attempt to apprehend this suspect," he said. Jennings said the fallen officers were "heroes that were just simply trying to keep our community safe."
A total of nine law enforcement officers were hurt, including three CMPD officers, a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force member, and one CMPD who suffered a broken foot during the incident. The chaotic standoff lasted for hours before CMPD SWAT teams cleared the house in east Charlotte's Shannon Park neighborhood, north of Shamrock Drive and east of East Sugar Creek Road and Eastway Drive. Joshua Eyer was critically injured in the shooting and died after being taken to a hospital.
The site of the fire had two twin buildings that were under construction. Firefighters did successfully extinguish small fires that had spread to the second building. That second building was largely undamaged during the five-alarm fire across the street.
